Mictecacihuatl
The End is Nigh at Light Grey Art Lab
Mictecacihuatl is the Queen of the Underworld, Mictlan, in Aztec mythology. She has a skull face and swallows the stars during the day. She wears a skirt made of serpents and various headdresses, but her favorite flowers are marigolds. Mictecacihuatl is responsible of guarding the bones of the dead and presides over ancient festivals of death.
Today, Mictecacihuatl presides over Día de los Muertos, a festival commemorating loved ones who have passed on, with Pan de Muerto, Altares and Tapetes. During this time, the veil between the living and the dead is lifted, allowing loved ones to be reunited, not in mourning, but in celebration!
